A Class 12 boy allegedly committed suicide in Tamil Nadu today, sparking concern and protests over a rash of schoolboy deaths in the state.
This is the fifth incident in two weeks and the second in just 24 hours.
The boy was once found dead in his house in Sivaganga district. Police said he left a suicide note in which he said he could not cope with maths and biology.
Earlier, four schoolgirls died by suicide; Three of them are in class 12.
This morning, a girl from class 11 was found dead in Shivkashi. The girl had been suffering from chronic, severe abdominal pain, Investigators said.
Hours before the girl’s death, another Class 12 scholar was found dead in the Cuddalore district.
Police officer Karthik said, the student wrote In a four-page suicide note about her “inability to fulfill the IAS aspirations imposed on her by her parents”, .
On Monday, a Class 12 scholar of Sacred Heart Girls Higher Secondary School in Tiruvallur district was found dead in her hostel. There was no word of suicide.
The first of these deaths, reported in the Kallakurichi district on July 13, sparked widespread protests and arson that left several injured. The student was once found destitute in a private residential school.
Five people, including the school’s essentials and two teachers, were arrested after police determined a term that accused the two teachers of “insulting him for his tutorial performance”.
The girl’s parents alleged that there were signs and symptoms of physical struggle at the place where she was once seen and approached the court. The Madras High Court then ordered a re-mortem.
Yesterday, Chief Minister MK Stalin said the reviews of student suicides were “painful”.
“Under no circumstances should college students contemplate suicide. Turn exams into success,” Mr. Stalin said, urging teachers to instill intellectual energy in children.
He said that challenging action will be taken against those involved in sexual, intellectual and physical harassment of students.
