Former Pakistani PM Imran Khan Sentenced to 14 Years in Corruption Case

Former Pakistani Prime Minister and ex-cricket captain Imran Khan, 72, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty in a £200 million corruption case. His wife, Bushra Bibi, received a seven-year sentence for their involvement in accepting land from real estate tycoon Malik Riaz in exchange for laundered money. Prosecutors allege that Khan allowed Riaz to pay imposed fines with laundered funds. Khan, who has faced approximately 200 charges since his 2023 arrest, denies any wrongdoing, asserting that the cases are politically motivated to prevent his return to office.

Despite his party’s allegations of political pressure, the court, led by Judge Nasir Javed Rana, upheld the conviction. Bushra Bibi was arrested in court following her recent bail. Khan, who led Pakistan to a World Cup cricket victory in 1992, was ousted in a 2022 no-confidence vote and survived an assassination attempt later that year. His convictions have previously been delayed amid claims they were intended to pressure him to withdraw from politics.
