A group of college students of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University today claimed that they were attacked by security guards deployed by the institute when they peacefully disrupted the release of scholarship money which they insisted had been withheld for over two years. Half a dozen college students were reportedly injured in clashes between BJP-affiliated student recruiters Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, or ABVP, and campus security guards.
ABVP JNU president Rohit Kumar said the guards abused and misbehaved with the students. “The condition of this department is such that now only 4 staff are left where earlier there was 17 staff. The students have been suffering for more than two years. They are not getting non-net scholarships, MCM (merit-cum-means) or even JRF,” he said.
Visuals from the scene show a group of uniformed security guards pushing and trying to restrain a group of protesting students inside what looks like an administrative office. Some movies show bloodstains on the floor, bloody dressings in dustbins, and broken glass scattered on the floor.
Several students, displaying their injuries, claimed that they were “targeted” by security guards and suffered severe injuries.
The university administration has not given any statement so far.
