₹23 Crore Meth Haul Seized in Mizoram’s Champhai; Smugglers Escape, No Arrests Yet

In a major crackdown on drug smuggling, security forces seized methamphetamine tablets worth over ₹23 crore in Mizoram’s Champhai district, officials said on Friday.The operation was carried out by Assam Rifles in coordination with Mizoram Police. Acting on specific inputs, the joint team launched a search operation near Hmunhmeltha Road in the eastern part of the district.During the operation, the team recovered a large quantity of methamphetamine tablets from an abandoned vehicle. The vehicle, which had an Assam registration number, was found parked along the roadside. Officials said the total quantity of drugs seized was around 7.9 kg.

The estimated market value of the seized contraband is about ₹23.73 crore, making it one of the significant recoveries in the region in recent times.Security personnel suspect that the smugglers fled the spot after noticing the movement of the forces. No arrests have been made so far.Officials said the seized drugs and the vehicle have been handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai for further investigation. A case has been registered and efforts are underway to identify and track down those involved in the smuggling network.

Methamphetamine, often called a “crazy drug”, is a highly addictive substance and is banned in India. Its illegal trade has been a growing concern in border states, especially in areas close to international borders.
