Former Mizoram Chief Minister and Mizo National Front (MNF) President Zoramthanga has claimed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his desire to see the MNF form the next government in the state. Speaking during a party session at the MNF headquarters in Aizawl on Monday, Zoramthanga said the support was conveyed during Shah’s visit to Mizoram on March 15. The two leaders reportedly held detailed discussions on political matters, Mizoram’s governance, and India’s relationship with Myanmar.
“Shah ji clearly conveyed his wish for MNF to return to power. He encouraged us to work hard at the grassroots level to achieve this,” Zoramthanga said, adding that he had not met a leader so enthusiastic about the MNF’s resurgence. The MNF is an ally of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and supports the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre but maintains distance from the BJP within the state.
Mizoram is currently governed by the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), which ousted the MNF in the 2023 assembly polls. Responding to Shah’s query on ZPM’s performance, Zoramthanga said, “The government is still new and learning.”
