Wokha uses breathalyzers and CCTV surveillance to increase road safety

An important step toward enhancing law enforcement and traffic safety in Wokha town was taken on April 17 when the Wokha District Traffic Safety Committee solemnly dedicated a set of recently installed CCTV cameras and breath analyzers during a function held at the Wokha Police Station. In cooperation with the District Administration, Police, and other committee departments, the Transport Department supported the implementation of the program, which was undertaken under the District Road Safety Plan. The Road Safety Fund provided funding for the equipment.

Five CCTV cameras have been placed in key areas as part of the first phase: three in the Clock Tower area, one at the traffic point beneath the Deputy Commissioner’s office, and one near Tsumang Lake. In order to increase surveillance coverage throughout Wokha, the committee intends to install an additional 15 cameras. CCTV footage can now be seen in a control room at the Wokha Police Station. Two advanced breath analyzers have been added to the CCTV network for law enforcement use.

In order to decrease blind spots and increase road visibility, the Transport Department and the District Road Safety Committee have teamed up to install eight convex mirrors at strategic points. It is anticipated that the technology will discourage drug usage, drunk driving, and other criminal activity in the community. The initiative’s potential was recognized by Deputy Commissioner Vineet Kumar, who also called for appropriate use and public cooperation. Wokha M. Rhovisie Nyuwi, Superintendent of Police, commended the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for acquiring the apparatus.
