The BJP has announced Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhakhar as its choice to be the next Vice President of India. BJP chief JP Nadda made the announcement after the party’s parliamentary board meeting in Delhi to discuss their choices.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the meeting, which was attended by Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and BJP National General Secretary BL Santosh.
Jagdeep Dhankhar was in the national capital these days and referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi before the top minister left for the Parliamentary Board meeting.
Governors of various states comprising Madhya Pradesh and Manipur also met PM Modi. They are in the national capital to attend a dinner hosted by outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind.
The Parliamentary Board is the BJP’s highest organizational body, and its participants include Modi and Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Nitin Gadkari, along with birthday party president JP Nadda, among others.
The Electoral College chooses the next Vice-President, who consists of the ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
Of the modern-day strength of Parliament (780), the BJP on its own has 394 MPs, more than the majority mark (390).
