Thembang Fortified Village, located in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district, is presently listed as a final tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site. An important step toward the village’s preservation and recognition was taken when a public meeting-cum-hearing was held to examine the steps needed to get it on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Shri Choiki Dondup, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Dirang, presided over the meeting.
The creation of a thorough site management plan and infrastructure preparedness for heritage conservation were the main topics of the discussion. As the meeting’s chair, ADC Dondup asked the Local Consultative Committee (LCC) to work with the state’s Research Department to create a comprehensive master plan that complies with cultural preservation standards. By prohibiting unlawful tree-cutting and ensuring cleanliness across the community, he also emphasized the significance of preserving ecological balance.
Dondup gave the locals his word that the suggested initiatives would be carried out transparently and to the highest possible standards. In response to public inquiries, the administration put up a Comprehensive Site Management Plan. At 2,169 meters, Thembang Dzong is a living monument with historical value and traditional architecture. There are about 250 people living in the settlement, with 42 homes. The village panchayat is in charge of managing property ownership collectively. Thembang’s archaeological and cultural value has been solidified by the discovery of important prehistoric items during excavations. The local government and people are protecting this distinctive Himalayan heritage for coming generations as UNESCO certification moves closer.
