In a bid to strengthen disaster and emergency response capabilities, a large-scale civil defence mock drill was conducted across Tripura on Wednesday. The exercise in Agartala took place at Umakanta English Medium School Ground under the West District administration. The drill was part of a nationwide initiative rolled out after a high-level meeting involving District Magistrates and Chief Secretaries. A total of 244 locations across India were selected for the exercise, with all eight districts of Tripura participating using trained civil defence volunteers.
West District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar said, “This drill aimed to assess coordinated action among various agencies in disaster scenarios. It included simulations of both an earthquake and an air crash.” Key participants included personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF), Tripura Police, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), NCC, Apda Mitra volunteers, and other emergency agencies.
The simulation began with an earthquake scenario, followed by an air crash response, highlighting the importance of quick evacuation, first aid, and inter-agency coordination. As a precautionary measure, electricity supply in Agartala was briefly suspended from 5:30 PM to 5:40 PM during the exercise.
