Tripura sets ambitious goal to achieve zero road deaths, says Transport Minister

Tripura records an alarming 750 road traffic accidents annually, resulting in approximately 250 deaths, prompting the state government to intensify efforts to achieve zero road fatalities. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted these figures during the 15th State Road Safety Council meeting on December 23. “Our aim is to reduce road accidents to zero by focusing on public awareness and adopting advanced traffic management measures,” said Chowdhury. He emphasized that caution and education are crucial to preventing road mishaps.

The government has implemented various initiatives, including public awareness campaigns in 25 colleges to address road safety, consumer protection, and drug abuse. These programs are coordinated by the Transport, Food, and Home Affairs departments. Technological interventions, such as sophisticated traffic equipment and interceptor vehicles, have been introduced to enhance traffic control. Additionally, a Good Samaritan award of ₹5,000 is offered to individuals assisting accident victims.

Minister Chowdhury noted that compliance with the Supreme Court Road Safety Committee’s directives has led to a 13% reduction in accident-related fatalities in 2024 compared to 2023. District Road Safety Committees are now mandated to meet twice monthly, and a dedicated Road Safety Wing is being established.
