Tripura opposition leader slams ‘One Nation, One Election’ as path to dictatorship

Tripura Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government, alleging that the “One Nation, One Election” proposal is a veiled attempt to impose dictatorship in India. Speaking to reporters, Chaudhury, who is also a CPI(M) Politburo member, claimed that the BJP and RSS are trying to monopolise political power under the guise of electoral reform. “This move is not about efficiency—it is about control. It goes against the democratic spirit of our Constitution,” he said.

Chaudhury argued that if a government loses support mid-term, it must step down, and enforcing a five-year term regardless would be unconstitutional. He further claimed that the central government is spreading confusion, particularly by involving school students and misusing the administration to push its narrative.

“The narrative of good governance is just a distraction. Ground realities tell a different story—there is rising unemployment in rural areas, and poverty is growing. Instead of addressing these issues, the BJP is focused on consolidating power,” he added.
