As the world marked World Environment Day, Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma made a heartfelt appeal to citizens across the state to take personal responsibility for protecting nature. Speaking at an event organised by the Tripura Pollution Control Board, the Minister urged every individual to commit to building a greener and more sustainable Tripura. “This day is more than just a date on the calendar — it is a reminder of our shared duty to safeguard the environment,” said Minister Debbarma. “If we fail to keep our surroundings clean, green, and healthy, the damage will fall upon us and our future generations. The health of our civilisation is tied to the health of our planet.”The Minister emphasised the critical importance of forest conservation, tree plantation, and reducing plastic use. He reiterated that environmental protection cannot be seen as the sole responsibility of the government. “Every citizen must play a role. Whether it is by planting a tree, avoiding single-use plastics, or caring for water catchment areas — small steps make a big difference,” he said.
Debbarma particularly stressed the importance of preserving catchment areas, warning that neglect leads to frequent floods and ecological imbalance. He also underlined the role forests play in maintaining climate stability and biodiversity. The event witnessed the participation of school and college students, environmental enthusiasts, and local citizens, who joined in an awareness rally across Agartala city. The rally, held under the banner of “Our Earth, Our Responsibility,” aimed to educate the public about environmental challenges and encourage proactive solutions. The Minister also urged everyone to take a pledge on the occasion — to plant more trees, minimise plastic usage, and work collectively to protect Tripura’s rich natural heritage.
World Environment Day is observed globally every year on June 5, serving as a platform to raise awareness and stimulate action for environmental protection. This year’s observance in Tripura was seen as a major step toward encouraging public participation in the state’s green mission. Officials from the Forest Department, Pollution Control Board, and various NGOs were present at the event, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a cleaner and greener future.
