Tripura CM reaffirms zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has reaffirmed the state’s zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking, highlighting the increasing inflow of narcotics from Myanmar via Assam and Mizoram. Addressing the Assembly on April 1, Saha disclosed that 70 people have been convicted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the past three years.

“Drugs are coming into Tripura from Myanmar through Assam and Mizoram, while ganja is being smuggled out of the state,” the chief minister said in response to a notice by Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy. He emphasized that law enforcement agencies have been instructed to intensify their crackdown on drug-related activities. According to official data, 19 people were convicted in 13 NDPS cases in 2022, followed by 20 convictions in 16 cases in 2023, and 26 convictions in 2024. In the first two months of 2025 alone, five individuals have been convicted, bringing the total number of convictions to 70 in 52 registered cases.

Saha also highlighted the massive drug seizures made over the past two years. “Between 2022-23 and 2023-24, authorities seized 1.54 lakh kg of ganja, confiscated 5.82 lakh banned cough syrup bottles, and recovered 25.62 lakh yaba tablets,” he said. The chief minister stressed that the government remains committed to tackling drug trafficking networks and preventing Tripura from becoming a transit hub for illegal substances. He assured that security agencies are closely monitoring trafficking routes and taking stringent action against offenders.
