Tripura CM Dr. Manik Saha highlights key outcomes from 72nd NEC Plenary session

Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, in a press conference on Wednesday, discussed the key takeaways from the recently concluded 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC). The session, which brought together Chief Ministers and Governors from the Northeast, addressed a range of issues, including the current situation in Bangladesh, internal security, the fight against the drug menace, and various developmental initiatives for the region. Dr. Saha emphasized that the session provided an important platform for increasing awareness about Tripura’s resources, including bamboo, agar, roads, and tourism. “Many people were previously unaware of Tripura’s potential. The session helped highlight our state’s strengths, benefiting us significantly,” he said. The session also included discussions on the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) and a Bankers’ Summit, aimed at fostering financial cooperation and development.

A major focus of the discussions was the situation in Bangladesh, with Dr. Saha outlining the status of border fencing and the deployment of BSF, Tripura Police, and CRPF personnel. The state’s future security needs were also raised, ensuring that border issues remain a priority in future NEC discussions. In addition to security concerns, the meeting underscored the importance of creating a drug-free Northeast and furthering developmental projects in the region. Dr. Saha also noted that over Rs 800 crore would be allocated for the resettlement of Brus, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally overseeing the implementation of the project.

Dr. Saha expressed confidence that the NEC session would strengthen inter-state coordination and open the door for more developmental initiatives. He also took the opportunity to criticize Congress for its alleged historical disrespect toward Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, urging the party to apologize for their past actions.
