THRC launches probe onto Dhalai looting and arson

The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) and the District Magistrate (DM) of Dhalai to submit a detailed inquiry report following allegations of mob violence, looting, and arson. The complainant, Rakesh Sarkar, has raised concerns about the destruction of his property and inadequate compensation following the incident.

Sarkar, a resident of Haripur 30 Card in North Gandachara, Dhalai District, filed a written complaint to the THRC, detailing the events that unfolded after a violent incident during a large-scale event, ‘Ananda Mela,’ on July 7, 2024. A young man, Parameshwar Reang, was injured in a clash and later succumbed to his injuries on July 12, 2024. Following Reang’s death, tensions escalated, culminating in a mob riot.

According to the complaint, an unlawful assembly looted valuables, including gold ornaments, household goods, and cash, and set several homes, including Sarkar’s, on fire. The violent mob, armed with sticks, knives, and other weapons, allegedly looted Rs 2.55 lakh in cash, Rs 2.65 lakh worth of gold ornaments, furniture, and destroyed important documents and household goods. Sarkar claims a total loss of Rs 19.8 lakh.

The complaint also criticizes the police for their failure to take preventive action during the riot. Although a case was registered at Gandachara Police Station, Sarkar was dissatisfied with the response. He further expressed his displeasure with the compensation of Rs 3 lakh, which he found insufficient.
