The Department of Tourism started Meghalaya’s Strawberry Festival, which has developed into a significant yearly celebration of rural development, agrotourism, and cultural heritage. The festival showcases the state’s accomplishments in rural entrepreneurship and is organized by Meghalayan Age Limited (MAL) with assistance from the Departments of Tourism and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare. Another year of exciting celebrations is in store as the event is set to take place on May 2 and 3 at three different locations: Sohliya in the Ri Bhoi District, Syntung in the East Khasi District, and Darechikgre in the West Garo Hills District.
Strawberry picking, cooking demonstrations, a workshop on local beverages, live music, food, kid-friendly activities, and much more are among the exciting events that visitors can observe. Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister, recently visited Syntung village and spoke with farmers who are helping to make the state a strawberry success story. In order to increase farmer incomes and spur economic growth, the government intends to spread cultivation over 100–500 acres.
The Strawberry Festival in Meghalaya, held from April 12-13, 2024, features live musical performances, cultural performances, and adventure activities. It showcases the vibrant culture of the state, offers learning sessions on traditional wine making, beverages, and organic farming methods, and boosts community empowerment. Meghalaya produced 1,220 metric tonnes of strawberries in 2024, promoting sustainable livelihoods and agro-tourism.
