The Arunachal government is encouraged to increase irrigation funding for farmers’ welfare

Biyuram Wahge, the minister of water resource development for Arunachal Pradesh, emphasized the importance of enhancing the welfare and economic standing of the farming community in the state, where around 70% of the population makes their living from agriculture. NCP member Toko Tatung brought up a short-hour discussion in the assembly, and Wahge responded by saying that millions of crores would be needed to provide irrigation infrastructure throughout all possible agricultural areas.

“Assigning a minimum fund per assembly constituency would ensure the rational development of irrigation infrastructure given the state’s financial constraints,” he stated. Wahge also emphasized how existing irrigation systems deteriorated over time as a result of inadequate maintenance funding, eventually falling into ruin. “It would be proactive and dynamic to ensure adequate funds for irrigation and securing citizens’ livelihoods,” he continued.

Tatung started the conversation by highlighting how crucial it is to boost irrigation investment in order to shield agricultural land from erosion brought on by floods. He emphasized how much money the government spends on buying food grains to be distributed via the Public Distribution System.
