Tata Motors Empowers Women to bring about a Socioeconomic Change

Tata Motors Samaj Vikas Kendra (SVK) is empowering women in rural India to achieve economic independence through the traditional handicraft of ‘Chikankari’. The project has led to over 150 women forming Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and participating in credit and thrift activities, mobilizing Rs.25 lakhs over the past 16 years.

SVK began working on this project in 2007 with a two-pronged strategy to revive the handicraft and link it to women’s social economic development. They established a dedicated training center for women from 15 villages to equip them with the required skills and market trends.

In 2011, the SHG Federation program expanded to include new skill sets like jute bags, candles, herbal Gulal, cloth bags, and artificial jewellery. CSR Head Vinod Kulkarni stated that the SHG Federation is a 360-degree program that helps women develop their own enterprises, attain financial freedom, and uplift their socioeconomic status. The success of the program demonstrates Tata Motors’ commitment to a more equitable society.
