Tata Electronics has been approved by the Government of India to build the nation’s first indigenous semiconductor assembly and test facility in Assam. The facility will be built with the cost of INR 27,000 crore, in Jagiroad, Assam, and is expected to generate over 27,000 jobs in the region. It will focus on three key platform technologies: Wire Bond, Flip Chip, and Integrated Systems Packaging (ISP).
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said that the semiconductor fab and this strategic project will enable global customers to base a key part of their semiconductor value chain in India. The announcement aims to create an end-to-end semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India.
These technologies are critical for key applications in India, such as automotive, communications, and network infrastructure. The construction is scheduled to begin this year, with the first phase expected to be operational by mid-2025. Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD of Tata Electronics Private Limited, said that the strategy of serving across the semiconductor value chain will enable Tata Electronics to deliver complete system offerings to customers. The investment will help India become a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing and spur a domestic high-tech manufacturing ecosystem while enabling the indigenous product ecosystem.
