Former Minister and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman has called on CPI(M) workers to switch allegiance to Congress in a bid to defeat the ruling BJP in Tripura. He asserted that CPI(M) has lost public support, making it difficult for the party to return to power. Addressing a gathering of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee in Agartala, Roy Barman, who is also a Congress Working Committee member, argued that communist ideologies do not necessarily have to align with CPI(M) or other Left parties. “Can CPI(M) workers bring their party to power solely with their own votes? Public support for CPI(M) has dwindled. If you want to remove the BJP, you have no option but to join Congress,” he stated. Roy Barman also criticized the BJP-led state government, accusing it of failing to provide jobs and prioritizing corruption over governance.
“In the last seven years, over 30,000 government employees retired, yet many posts remain vacant. BJP claims to have provided 13,000 jobs, but most of their promises remain unfulfilled,” he said. He further alleged that BJP leaders were engaging in land brokerage, forcefully occupying private land, and running a commission-driven government. “The people of Tripura have suffered immensely. Businessmen are scared, unemployment is rising, and democracy is vanishing. A political earthquake is coming,” he warned.
With Tripura’s political landscape shifting, Congress is looking to consolidate anti-BJP votes by bringing in CPI(M) workers. Roy Barman’s appeal signals a strategic move ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle in the state.
