State Promotes Mizo Culture by Encouraging Traditional Attire in Offices

The Government of Mizoram has encouraged its employees to wear Mizo traditional dresses to their workplaces in the days leading up to the celebration of Chapchar Kut 2026, one of the most important cultural festivals of the Mizo community.According to an official memorandum issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) on March 10, the festival will be celebrated across the state on March 13, 2026 (Friday). The government said the initiative is aimed at promoting and preserving the rich cultural traditions and values of the Mizo people.

As part of the initiative, all employees working under the Government of Mizoram, including those in Public Sector Undertakings, Boards, Bodies and other agencies under the state government, have been requested to wear Mizo traditional attire to their offices from March 9 to March 12, 2026.Officials said the move is intended to create a festive atmosphere in government offices while also encouraging pride in traditional culture and heritage. Chapchar Kut is widely celebrated across Mizoram with cultural programmes, music, dance and traditional festivities, and it remains one of the most significant festivals for the Mizo community.

The memorandum further stated that all Administrative Heads and Heads of Departments have been asked to inform officials and employees under their respective departments about the request so that the initiative can be widely observed.Chapchar Kut marks the arrival of spring and is traditionally celebrated after the completion of jungle clearing for jhum cultivation. Over the years, the festival has grown into a major cultural event in Mizoram, bringing together communities through traditional dances, music and cultural activities.
