Sonowal takes stock of measures of WR Dept for stopping erosion at Sadiya

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today visited Sadiya and took stock of measures taken by Water Resource Department to stop erosion caused by Kundil River on the National Highway 37 there. The steps taken by the department with the support of district administration and local people have been able to avert the danger posed by erosion to the national highway and a bridge in Sadiya.

Later talking to the media persons there, Chief Minister Sonowal remarked that Kundil River’s erosion this year threatened to snap Assam’s road links with other NE states like Arunachal Pradesh and Water Resource Department’s timely measures could save the affected portion of the road and the bridge.

Saying that 28 districts had been affected by flood this year which caused large scale devastations, Sonowal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to constitute North East Water Management Authority (NEWMA) following the recommendation of high level committee set up under the chairmanship of NITI Aayog vice chairman would go a long way in finding permanent solutions to flood and erosion problems in Assam and NE. Central Government would take steps for passing a bill in this regard in the next session of parliament and it is first such initiative at the Prime Minister’s level in the last 72 years after independence, he added.
