Sikaar sets a new benchmark for Assamese cinema at RIFF 2025

Sikaar, the 2024 Assamese action-thriller, has created history at the 11th Rajasthan International Film Festival (RIFF) 2025 by taking home the Best International Film-Directors award. The film, which stars Zubeen Garg, Urmila Mahanta, and Adil Hussain, has received praise for its compelling plot and impressive cinematic production. As the highest-budget Assamese film ever produced, Sikaar, which was directed by Debangkar Borgohain and produced by Sam Bhattacharjee and Mitra Bhattacharya, elevated the local industry to a global level.

At the festival in Jodhpur, Debangkar Borgohain received the Best Directed International Film award, marking another milestone for Assamese cinema. Speaking about the film’s success, producer Sam Bhattacharjee remarked, “Sikaar has been recognized in many places because of its unique nature. The best movie from Assam is yet to come.”

Bhattacharjee clarified that the ₹3 crore amount did not represent the entire budget; rather, it simply represented the costs associated with filming in India. As far as the future of Assamese cinema is concerned, it seems remarkably promising. With its ground-breaking budget, global recognition, and visionary outlook, Sikaar has redefined Assamese cinema and sparked a wave of ambitious future projects, creating a new standard.
