Shri Rameshwar Teli envisions making the North East the hub of a vibrant energy sector following Cairn’s ‘Barmer Model’

Shri Rameshwar Teli, MoS – Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Labour & Employment, and Member of Parliament representing Dibrugarh since 2014 said the Northeastern states have the potential to emerge as a vibrant energy sector hub. He also talked about his commitment to driving transformative change in the Northeast’s petroleum and natural gas sector.  Shri Teli observed the remarkable socio-economic development in Barmer, Rajasthan, where per capita income has increased by an impressive 650 per cent since the start of oil production at the Cairn Oil and Gas facility.

Assam and the Northeast region are crucial for India’s Aatmanirbharta in the energy sector, with over 100 oil fields and 200 million metric tons of crude oil reserves, holding 18% of the country’s hydrocarbon resources

. Private companies like Cairn announced test production from the Assam field last year and plan to drill exploration wells in the next two years across the Golaghat, Jorhat, and Tinsukia districts of Assam.  Shri Teli said “The ‘Barmer model’ can be replicated in the Northeast, which has abundant natural gas and petroleum reserves.  Shri Teli’s views align with the GOI’s 15-year roadmap for accelerating oil and gas production in the Northeast region, where companies like ONGC, Oil India, and Cairn Oil & Gas operate from their fields in Jorhat, Digboi, and Hazarigarh of Assam.
