Road accident death rate has dropped in Kerala after AI cameras became operational

Kerala Transport Minister Antony Raju has claimed that since the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) cameras, the death rate in road accidents has come down in the state.

The AI cameras installed across the state became operational on June 5. “Kerala reports an average of 12 road accident deaths per day, but since the introduction of AI cameras, the number has come down to 5-8,” Minister Raju said on Friday.

In the first four days since installation, 3,52,730 traffic violations were detected by the cameras. The minister said that Keltron has uploaded 19,790 cases to the Integrated Transport Monitoring System, which verifies the detections. The motor vehicle department has issued challans for 10,457 violations till June 8.

“Among the violations, 7,896 were vehicle passengers not wearing seat belts. 6,153 were riding without helmets, and 715 were pillion riders without helmets,” said Minister Raju. The cameras detected violations in 56 government vehicles, including VIP vehicles.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the ‘Safe Kerala’ project in April. AI cameras come under that project.
