Relentless rainfall forces continued school closures in Aizawl

Schools in Aizawl remained closed for the fourth straight day on Tuesday as relentless rainfall continued to trigger landslides, floods, and widespread damage across Mizoram. Authorities confirmed five fatalities so far, including three Myanmarese refugees. Aizawl Deputy Commissioner Lalhriatpuia, who also heads the District Disaster Management Authority, issued a fresh advisory suspending student attendance on June 3, citing safety concerns due to ongoing hazards like rockfalls and mudslides.

The state capital witnessed heavy downpour again on Tuesday morning, worsening the situation. Schools had earlier remained closed on May 29, 30, and June 2 amid similar alerts. According to the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, landslides have blocked roads at 190 locations, severely impacting transportation. Over 200 families have been evacuated as homes collapsed or developed severe cracks. More than 190 houses have suffered damage.

Since May 24, Mizoram has been battered by incessant rains, with heavy rainfall recorded from May 30 onwards. The Indian Meteorological Department reported 253.7 mm rainfall in Aizawl over the last three days, followed by Khawzawl (248.33 mm) and Siaha (241.5 mm). Light to moderate rain is expected in the next five days, officials said, but cautioned that vulnerable areas remain at risk of further landslides.
