With the May 18 deadline drawing close, Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma has stepped up pressure on the Assam Rifles to expedite the deportation of illegal immigrants in Tripura, in line with the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) recent directive. The legislator met with Brigadier Manish Rana on Wednesday and submitted a detailed memorandum calling for immediate and decisive action. The MHA’s directive, issued on May 19, 2025, instructed all state Chief Secretaries, Union Territory administrators, and border forces to identify and deport illegal migrants—specifically Bangladeshi and Rohingya nationals—within 30 days. With 22 days already elapsed, Debbarma expressed serious concern that only 8 days remained to complete the extensive operations mandated by the central government. “There are already 22 days gone out of the given 30-day timeframe. Only 8 days are left,” the MLA noted in his appeal, stressing the urgency of immediate intervention.
Debbarma, who had earlier written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in August 2024 and May 2025, reiterated his longstanding demand for a strict crackdown on cross-border infiltration. He laid out a multi-pronged action plan including:
Establishing check posts at the entry and exit routes of vulnerable villages near Assam Rifles camps.
Deploying additional troops to bolster manpower during the final phase of the operation.
Cancelling leave for security personnel to ensure uninterrupted enforcement.
Clearing forested areas around border camps to improve surveillance capabilities.
Enhancing intelligence operations to trace Indian brokers facilitating illegal entries.
He also emphasized the need for setting up temporary holding facilities with basic infrastructure—water, electricity, and sanitation—for identified illegal immigrants pending their deportation.“The creation of Assam Rifles chaukis at village peripheries is essential to control movement and identify infiltrators effectively,” Debbarma wrote, highlighting the need for heightened security along infiltration-prone stretches.
