Protesters will be answerable if NRC applicants are less in number, Assam CM

Amidst CAA implement tensions within the state, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated about not one single illegal migrants were allotted NRC within the state. The Assam CM has vowed to resign if found any one of them.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) allows those migrants who travelled to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh up to December 31, 2014 to seek Indian nationality by faith.

The CM said, “I am a son of Assam and if a single person who has not applied for NRC gets citizenship, I will be the first to resign.”

Sarma has also stated that he too would join the anti-CAA protest if the new law opens the floodgates for several lakhs to enter the state as claimed by the protesters. If the number of the applicants are small, the CM said, protesters will be answerable. Further, he added around 50,000 to 80,000 applicants are allotted NRC.
