President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Suriname on Sunday for a three-day visit to strengthen India’s bilateral relations with the South American country. It is her first State visit since taking office in July last year.The President is accompanied by Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Niranjan Jyoti and Member of Parliament, Rama Devi as part of the official Indian delegation.
The President’s official account tweeted “President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Paramaribo, Suriname on her first State Visit as the President of India. In a special gesture, President @CSantokhi of Suriname received the President at the airport with full state honours.”
The last time an Indian President visited Suriname was in 2018. In the second phase of her visit, President Murmu will visit Serbia from June 7 to hold a bilateral meeting with Serbian President Alexander Vusic, Prime Minister Ana Branbic, and National Assembly President Vladimir Oralik. She will also address a business program and talk to the Indian community. India and Suriname have close ties due to the Indian diaspora.
