Severe rain, hail, and strong winds battered Meghalaya and its surrounding regions, causing widespread disruptions. Electric wires and tree branches were toppled by the storm, leaving many places without power and creating issues for both the public and the authorities. With roads and rooftops blanketed in hail, the hailstorm transformed parts of Shillong, Mawiong, and Umiam into a winter wonderland. Residents were taken aback by the weather shift because the area’s typically verdant scenery was momentarily white.
Mawlai was particularly affected by the storm, as trees and high-tension cables were brought down along the main FCI Road. This led to power outages in a number of areas, including Kynton Massar, Nongmali, Mawlai Pata, and Mawlai Mawroh. Power lines between the 11 KV Mawroh and PHE feeders from Lumjingshai needed to be repaired immediately due to the extensive damage to the electrical system.
Over the next three to four days, Meghalaya, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are anticipated to have thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds of 30 to 40 km/h, along with moderate rainfall brought on by the existing meteorological systems. Furthermore, considerable rainfall is anticipated in remote areas, particularly in Meghalaya’s eastern and southern parts. Because of the region’s persistently unpredictable weather patterns, officials have advised residents to be alert for any disruptions and take the necessary precautions.
