A total of ₹15.59 crore has been disbursed to 5,436 families in Mizoram as compensation for pigs culled due to African Swine Fever (ASF). The “Distribution & Launching of ASF Compensation” programme was launched at the AH&Vety Department. Minister C. Lalsawivunga noted that since the detection of ASF in March 2021, the economy has suffered annually from pig deaths and culling. Compensation is provided according to Government of India guidelines, with a 50 per cent Centrally Sponsored Scheme and State Matching Share funding. However, the state received only 25 per cent of the required funds during the 2022-24 period, impacting compensation rates for beneficiaries. In 2024, compensation was extended to pig deaths due to ASF, set at ₹4,000 per pig for up to six pigs per beneficiary, as the Mizoram government declared ASF a State Disaster. A total of 26,179 animals across 11 districts qualified for compensation, with Aizawl having the most beneficiaries. Compensation rates for culled pigs range from ₹2,200 to ₹15,000 based on weight. The government is seeking full funding for 2025 in the upcoming Action Plan to support affected farmers.
