The Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department, in coordination with the Assam Rifles, seized over 350 grams of heroin in two separate operations conducted in the Champhai district, close to the India-Myanmar border. Three individuals have been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, according to an official statement. In the first operation on December 6, acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department and Assam Rifles personnel intercepted suspicious activity in the area between Zote village and the Tiau River. During the raid, 48 grams of heroin were confiscated. The accused, identified as Keddy Zosangliana (23) and Lalrinliana (21), both residents of Tachhip village in Aizawl district, were arrested on the spot.
In the second operation on December 7, officials from the excise and narcotics department conducted a raid in Zotlang village, leading to the recovery of 303 grams of heroin. The drugs were found in the possession of Lalsangzuala (44), a resident of Champhai town. The seized heroin is believed to have been smuggled from Myanmar, highlighting the ongoing challenges of cross-border narcotics trafficking in the region. The three accused have been booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act and are in custody pending further investigation.
Authorities have intensified anti-drug operations in Mizoram, particularly along the porous border with Myanmar, which is a known transit route for illicit drugs. Officials reiterated their commitment to curbing the drug menace in the state.
