Opposition walks out of Mizoram assembly over criticism of MYC Act

Mizoram’s opposition, led by Lalchhandama Ralte, staged a walkout from the state Assembly on Monday, protesting remarks by Chief Minister and House Leader Lalduhoma during discussions on the Mizoram Youth Commission (MYC) Bill, 2025.The opposition took offense at Lalduhoma’s criticism of the previous MYC Act, which he claimed lacked proper recruitment rules and financial audit provisions, leading to unrestricted expenditure. He called it a flawed system with questionable intentions, triggering strong objections from the opposition.

LESDE Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar clarified that the MYC Bill, 2025 seeks to strengthen the commission with greater transparency and accountability. However, opposition leader Lalchhandama Ralte accused Lalduhoma of disrespecting former lawmakers, pointing out that he was present when the earlier bill was passed. Congress MLA C. Ngunlianchunga also criticized Lalduhoma, arguing that if 70% of the old law was retained, there was no need for a complete repeal.

Defending the amendments, Lalduhoma maintained that the government must rectify past legislative flaws and criticized laws that allowed unchecked spending and irregular recruitment. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to modernizing outdated policies. Despite these explanations, the opposition refused to support the bill and walked out in protest, citing disparaging remarks against past leaders as their primary objection.
