Patients can amp up the recovery process from Covid-19 by incorporating a few changes to the daily routine, according to Ritika Samaddar (Regional Head – Dietetics, Max Healthcare – Delhi). She suggested a few tips for the recovered patients. As depletion of protein due to Covid-19 means lowering of immunity, she advised that one should increase his/her protein intake to get back muscle loss. To replenish this immunity, a high protein diet is recommended. One can add nuts such as almonds into the diet plan. Almonds are high in Vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant to support pulmonary immune function.
Hydrating the body with fluids, essentially water, is one of the most important steps to recover from any type of illness. Ritika Samaddar recommended increase intake of liquids like soups, coconut water, fresh lime water, shakes, etc in addition to water for better hydration during the illness and recovery phase.
Ritika Samaddar is advised to control the blood sugar levels, to avoid complications during the treatment of Covid and the post-recovery phase. The sugar levels can be controlled with the help of indoor exercise and yoga. Citrus fruits are the best during this time. One can also never go wrong with nuts such as a handful of almonds. She also suggested increasing immunity by eating plenty of fruits, veggies, and nuts like almonds to get the daily dose of vitamin C and zinc. Almonds can be a good substitute for unhealthy snacks.
