A female outsourced employee of Tripura Central University was injured on Tuesday when a protest by contractual workers led to a scuffle with private security personnel on the university campus. The incident took place when security guards attempted to clear a passage for Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr Shyamal Das while protesters had gheraoed the main administrative building. The protest was launched following reports that the university authorities had recommended the engagement of four outsourced employees as Daily Rated Workers, triggering resentment among other contractual staff. Protesters alleged that the move was arbitrary and violated the principle of equal opportunity, as only four employees were selected from a group of 93 outsourced workers working at similar levels and on comparable pay scales. They claimed they had been serving the university for nearly a decade through a third-party agency on fixed remuneration and argued that DRW status would place selected individuals under direct contractual engagement with the university.
