A total curfew has been imposed in Shillong and internet services have been shut down in the capital city of Meghalaya and several other parts of the state after stray incidence of violence marred Independence Day celebrations. Over one lakh people affected in Meghalaya Floods

Over a lakh have been affected due to the floods in the plain belt of West Garo Hills in Meghalaya, the area District Collector Ram Singh said. Five people have lost their lives. The area has witnessed a surge in water levels since the last one week, with most areas submerged under the flood, caused by the backflow of the Brahmaputra river. The Meghalaya government has extended the night curfew from 9 pm to 5 am till June 30, officials said on Sunday. The night curfew was to be in force till Monday. The state government has also extended the ban on inter-state movement of people till June 30, they said.
