New Strategic Bridge over Tlawng River Strengthens Mizoram’s Infrastructure

Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated the Lengtekai bridge, also known as the ‘Faith Bridge’, over the Tlawng River, a key infrastructure project financed by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways at a cost of Rs 43.83 crore. The bridge spans 100 meters in length and 7.5 meters in width with a 1.5-meter footpath on each side, designed to handle loads of up to 385 metric tons, thereby enhancing transport safety and capacity in the region. The Chief Minister mentioned the difficulties faced during the bridge’s initial launch in December 2024 due to pulley failure, leading to a successful repositioning in April 2025 after extensive technical preparations. The finishing works, including approach roads, were concluded by September 2025, leading to the formal opening.

The new bridge replaces older Bailey structures, improving load capacity and ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow without the need for vehicle unloading. The Chief Minister characterized the bridge as a symbol of reliability and a significant achievement in strengthening Mizoram’s infrastructure. It is vital for Mamit district, which consists of about 85,000 residents from approximately 90 villages, and supports agricultural initiatives, such as rubber cultivation under the Chief Minister Rubber Mission. The bridge facilitates connections between Mizoram, Tripura, and Bangladesh, aids the transport of local resources, and provides access to Lengpui Airport and major institutions like the National Institute of Technology Mizoram.

The Mamit–Bairabi corridor is expected to become increasingly important as regional connectivity improves. The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to timely and high-quality infrastructure development, noting that Mizoram’s average road density is only 46.37 km per 100 sq km, significantly below the national average, emphasizing the need for accelerated growth. He thanked Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the central government for their support. The bridge was built by Poddar Infra Tech, with design consultancy from Force Structural Engineering Pvt. Ltd., testing from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, and safety oversight by Engineering Project Consultants, ensuring strict adherence to quality assurance measures throughout its construction.
