Nepal has launched an ambitious reforestation initiative called “Green Himalaya,” aiming to plant over 10 million native trees by 2027 across degraded mountain slopes and buffer zones around national parks.
The program, backed by the UN Environment Programme, focuses on climate adaptation and livelihood generation through community forestry. Local villagers will be employed in nursery management, plantation, and forest monitoring.
Officials hope this campaign will also reduce the risk of landslides and soil erosion, which have been increasing due to erratic rainfall. Environmentalists in Bhutan and India have shown interest in cross-border collaboration to expand the movement into shared ecological zones.
