Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on March 13 and 14 to launch several development projects and take part in public programmes across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the visit during a press conference in Guwahati on Tuesday. According to the Chief Minister, the Prime Minister will dedicate development projects worth around ₹10,000 crore during his two-day visit. The programmes will take place in Kokrajhar, Guwahati and Silchar. The Prime Minister will begin his visit from Kokrajhar on March 13. There he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of a number of development projects related to infrastructure and public welfare. Later in the day, Modi will travel to Guwahati where he will attend another public programme. During this event, he will release an instalment under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for farmers. One of the main highlights of the visit will be the distribution of land rights certificates to members of the tea garden community. The community has been living and working in Assam’s tea gardens for nearly two centuries, but many families still do not have legal ownership of the land where they live.
Chief Minister Sarma said the Prime Minister will hand over the first land patta to a tea garden worker during the programme. This will formally launch a larger initiative of the Assam government to provide land rights to tea garden families across the state.On March 14, the Prime Minister will visit Silchar in southern Assam. During the visit, he will lay the foundation stone for the proposed Silchar–Shillong–Guwahati Express Highway. The highway project is estimated to cost around ₹22,000 crore and is expected to improve road connectivity between Barak Valley and other parts of the region. Modi will also dedicate the Kopili Hydro Power Project to the nation during his visit. The 150-megawatt project has been developed by the Assam government and is expected to contribute to the state’s power generation capacity. Public meetings are also planned during the Prime Minister’s visit. He will address gatherings in Kokrajhar, Guwahati and Silchar, the Chief Minister said.
Soon after the Prime Minister’s visit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also scheduled to come to Assam on March 15. During his visit, Shah will inaugurate the Pragjyotishpur Medical College in Guwahati.He will also attend a programme called the Yuva Sankalp Samavesh organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party. The event will be held at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, where around one lakh youth workers of the party are expected to participate. The visits of senior national leaders are taking place at a time when political activities in Assam are increasing ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The BJP-led government in the state is aiming to return to power for a third consecutive term.
