The Lunglei unit of Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), a prominent student body in Mizoram, launched an indefinite blockade on April 28, protesting the alleged diversion of funds meant for repairing the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei (ATL) road. MZP Lunglei sub-headquarters secretary K. Lalchhuanawma said the blockade was aimed at pressuring the government to release the funds earmarked for crucial road repairs. He said the organisation has been consistently demanding urgent action to improve the deteriorating condition of the ATL road, vital for connectivity in south Mizoram.
The blockade has disrupted traffic and daily activities in the region, with protestors vowing to continue until their demands are addressed. Meanwhile, political tensions escalated as the Mizoram BJP filed a complaint with Director General of Police Anil Shukla over the alleged abduction of Tuturu Singh, a member of the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) who recently joined the BJP after quitting the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM). According to BJP state general secretary Lalthangmawii, Singh was allegedly waylaid by unidentified miscreants near Lunglei while traveling to Aizawl.
