The Mizo National Front (MNF) and its ally, the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC Reformed), achieved a decisive victory in the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) elections held on November 5, securing seven out of the 12 seats. The MNF-HPC(R) coalition outperformed the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC), with ZPM managing to win only three of the eight seats it contested.
According to results released by the State Election Commission on November 5, the HPC did not win any of the four seats it contested, while the Congress secured just one seat. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which fielded a candidate for one seat, failed to make an impact. The outcome of one remaining seat is expected soon, officials reported on Wednesday. Notably, incumbent Chief Executive Member (CEM) Lalvenhima Hmar of the ZPM retained his Suangpuilawn seat, while council chairman HC Lalmalsawm lost to MNF’s Benjamin Lalrawnliana in Zohmun constituency.
Established on July 9, 2018, following a peace accord between the Mizoram government and the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic), the Sinlung Hills Council comprises 12 elected seats and two nominated positions.
