Mizoram to amend liquor prohibition law in ongoing budget session

The Mizoram government is set to introduce a bill to amend the state’s prohibition law during the ongoing budget session of the assembly, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on Friday.

Responding to the debate on the motion of thanks for the Governor’s address, Lalduhoma stated that the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act, 2019, would be amended to regulate beer and wine sales. “The excise and narcotics department minister will move the House to amend the liquor ban act,” he told the assembly.

The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government had earlier hinted at reviewing the 2019 prohibition law. Mizoram’s liquor policies have shifted frequently over the years, largely influenced by church groups and social organizations advocating for strict restrictions.

The prohibition law was enacted in 2019 under the Mizo National Front (MNF) government, but was amended in 2022 to permit the sale of locally produced grape wines. With the new government in power, the policy is under fresh review.
