Mizoram Shines with Nine Medals at North-East Ju-Jitsu Meet

Mizoram demonstrated stellar performance at the 1st North-East Ju-Jitsu Championship, held in Guwahati, Assam, from January 31 to February 2, where it secured a total of nine medals: six gold and three bronze, establishing itself as one of the most successful teams at the event. The state’s representation comprised a six-member contingent of five athletes and one coach, facilitated by the Ju-Jitsu Association of Mizoram (JAM), which sponsored the team’s travel, accommodation, food, and local logistics expenses.

The athletes showcased their skills across multiple formats of Ju-Jitsu, which is known for its three main competitive disciplines: Ne-Waza (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), Contact Fighting (under MMA rules), and the Fighting System that integrates striking and grappling techniques. As one of the fastest-growing martial arts worldwide, Ju-Jitsu is notably effective for self-defense and mixed martial arts (MMA), reflecting its increasing popularity across the global sporting landscape.

The championship provided a significant platform for athletes from various North-Eastern states to compete, spotlighting the expanding interest in the sport within the region. In Mizoram, the ascent of Ju-Jitsu can be attributed to the dedicated efforts of trainers and organizational bodies, leading athletes to participate successfully in both regional and national tournaments. Furthermore, the discipline has gained recognition from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and is acknowledged by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), with its inclusion as a medal event in upcoming Asian Games underscoring its growing significance in the sporting domain.
