Mizoram Police have arrested Simon Clement, a Belgian freelance journalist, after two empty cartridges were allegedly recovered from his possession at Lengpui Airport near Aizawl. Clement was taken into custody during a routine security check at the airport on Wednesday, police officials said. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Arms Act and was sent to judicial remand at Tanhril jail on Sunday.
Further investigations revealed that Clement had allegedly crossed over to Myanmar in violation of Indian visa regulations. Upon his return, authorities detained him for breaching immigration norms.
The Mizoram Journalist Association (MJA) has expressed concern over Clement’s arrest. MJA President C. Lalrambuatsaiha stated that the association’s representatives would meet Clement on Monday to extend their support.
