Mizoram Minister responds to MCC allegations amid election campaigns

Mizoram’s Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar has denied allegations of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) ahead of the upcoming Village Council and Local Council elections on February 12. The State Election Commission (SEC) had served show-cause notices to Hmar and PWD Minister Vanlalhlana following a complaint from the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF).

The MNF accused Vanlalhlana of campaigning virtually from his ministerial office for Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) candidates in Aizawl’s Durtlang Local Council, citing a viral video as evidence. Additionally, it alleged that Hmar announced development projects while meeting ZPM candidates on January 27, which they claimed violated the MCC.

However, speaking at a ZPM office event in Aizawl, Hmar dismissed the allegations, stating that he had only discussed previously approved government projects, which do not breach election regulations. Both Hmar and Vanlalhlana have submitted their explanations to the SEC. State Election Commissioner H Lalthlangliana confirmed that the commission is currently reviewing their responses and will make a decision soon.
