The Mizoram government has announced that all private de-addiction and rehabilitation centres must now obtain accreditation to continue operating, in a bid to improve quality and ensure compliance with existing laws. Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii made the announcement on May 19, stating that stricter norms would be enforced under the Mizoram Drug (Controlled Substances) Act, 2016 and the Mizoram Drug Treatment cum Rehabilitation Centre Accreditation Rules, 2019.
“Accreditation is now mandatory. Centres failing to meet minimum standards in infrastructure, staffing, and service delivery will not be allowed to operate,” Lalrinpuii told reporters in Aizawl. The minister emphasized that the move aims to bring uniformity and better management across rehabilitation centres, ensuring that individuals battling addiction receive proper care and support. Currently, the state has 46 government-run centres, including 11 Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts. Additionally, there are 25 private and eight church-run centres operating in Mizoram.
Lalrinpuii added that the state government appreciates the role of private centres and has supported them in the past. A proposal has also been submitted to the central government to set up five new centres in Saitual, Khawzawl, Hnahthial, Mamit, and Lawngtlai districts.
