Mizoram celebrates Green Mizoram Day with tree planting

With a renewed commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable growth, Mizoram celebrated Green Mizoram Day on June 11 across all districts, reaffirming the state’s long-standing dedication to preserving its lush, natural heritage. This year’s theme, “Plant Trees and Catch the Rain”, underscores the critical link between afforestation and water conservation—a message that resonated strongly amid growing climate concerns. The main state-level function was held in Thenzawl town of Serchhip district, where State Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Lalthansanga led the celebrations. Addressing the gathering, the minister stressed the multifaceted importance of trees—not only as providers of shade and oxygen but as crucial agents for groundwater preservation, soil retention, and biodiversity support.

“Trees are not only the lungs of the Earth, they are lifelines for our communities,” Lalthansanga said, urging all citizens to actively engage in environmental stewardship. “Our forests are our wealth, and protecting them is not just a responsibility—it is a necessity for our survival.” Ceremonial tree plantations were held at all district headquarters, engaging civil servants, schoolchildren, NGOs, and local communities in synchronized efforts. Roadsides, institutional premises, and community spaces turned green with the planting of thousands of saplings.

Adding a dignified presence to the event, Governor General (Retd.) Vijay Kumar Singh and his wife Bharti Singh joined the celebration at Raj Bhavan, where they planted the state tree of Mizoram, Hershe. The Governor remarked on the urgency of increasing afforestation efforts, especially in light of escalating climate disasters and erratic weather patterns. “Climate change is no longer a distant threat—it is a daily reality. Our response must be bold and immediate,” he said. Since its inception in 1999, Green Mizoram Day has become a flagship environmental initiative in the state. According to officials from the Environment and Forest Department, over 46 lakh trees have been planted over the past 26 years under the campaign. The initiative has played a significant role in maintaining the ecological balance of the state, which is known for its hilly terrain, dense forests, and rich biodiversity.
