The Meghalaya Education Department has introduced a strict academic calendar to regulate school operations and curb unauthorized holidays. The new directive mandates that educational institutions adhere to the official schedule, with any deviations requiring prior approval. Under the revised system, the 2025 academic year will begin on February 10, with a structured Class Readiness Programme for students. Primary school students (Classes I-V) will undergo the preparatory phase until March 7, while middle and high school students (Classes VI-X) will complete it by February 28.
In a major shift, the Department will oversee examination schedules for Classes VI-IX, and schools will be required to upload evaluation results to a digital platform for increased transparency. Standardized question papers for annual exams will be developed by the Department of Educational Research and Training (DERT) or the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE). The academic calendar also sets clear term dates, with sessions concluding on November 28 for pre-primary classes and December 17 for Classes I-IX, followed by a winter break. The directive mandates a minimum of 200 working days for primary schools and 220 days for higher classes, with corresponding instructional hours of 800 and 1,000, respectively.
In response to concerns raised by the National Achievement Survey (NAS), schools will dedicate focused periods at the beginning of each term. Primary classes will spend four weeks on foundational learning, while higher classes will have three weeks of targeted instruction to improve academic performance.
