Meghalaya Cabinet clears Rs 30 crore to revive stalled hydro project in West Garo Hills

In a major push to strengthen the state’s power infrastructure, the Meghalaya Cabinet has sanctioned ₹30 crore to clear pending dues and expedite completion of the long-delayed Ganol Stage-I Small Hydro Project in Tura, West Garo Hills. The 22.5 MW project, now nearing completion, had been stalled due to funding issues, with total project costs reaching ₹590.88 crore.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the funding is part of broader efforts to enhance energy generation and revive critical infrastructure. He also announced the revival of the long-pending Kynshi Stage-I Hydro Project with a new agreement to be signed with Athena Projects Private Limited. Originally designed as a 450 MW plant, it will now operate at 270 MW capacity after technical reassessment.

In addition, the Cabinet approved ₹14 crore to upgrade the Riangdo Small Hydro Project from 3 MW to 6 MW following a feasibility study by IIT Roorkee. Two new private hydro projects—the 24 MW Nongmer and 13.5 MW Umran—have also been cleared under public-private partnership models, with Meghalaya set to receive 12% of the power generated free of cost.
