In response to the heightened tensions engulfing Myanmar, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a stark advisory to Indian nationals, urging caution in the face of mounting instability in the Rakhine state. Released on Tuesday, the advisory strongly advises against travel to the region and implores Indian citizens already residing there to evacuate promptly. Citing a breakdown in security, telecommunications, and essential goods shortages, the MEA’s advisory underscores the gravity of the situation, warning against any non-essential travel to Rakhine. Furthermore, Indian citizens currently present in the state are urged to depart without delay, as outlined in the official statement.
India’s concerns over the deteriorating situation in Myanmar have been vocalized in recent weeks, with official statements highlighting the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict. The MEA’s weekly press briefing reiterated this stance, stressing Myanmar’s path towards establishing an “inclusive federal democracy” and the cessation of violence. Myanmar’s turmoil has intensified in recent months, with three ethnic minority factions launching a coordinated offensive against the military junta, seizing control of key towns and military installations. This escalation presents the most significant challenge to junta rule since the 2021 coup.
Additionally, the repercussions of Myanmar’s crisis extend to its border regions, with a notable influx of individuals seeking refuge in Mizoram along the Indo-Myanmar border. It’s been three years since Myanmar’s military seized power in February 2021, igniting ongoing unrest and instability in the region.
